In the first line of his Metaphysics, Aristotle posits that “all men by nature desire to know”. It follows that man is able to know by his very nature and that man’s nature can be known- the title of this blog, A Nature to Know, is a play on these two realities. Each field of study makes its own claims about human nature (e.g. how ought man to act, towards what end man is acting). The study of economics too makes claims about human nature, mainly that man is rational, calculating, self-interested, and utility maximizing. Yet, this view is limited, which brings rise to the question: what are the implications of theories and policies that do not hold a comprehensive view of human nature? This inquiry is at the foundation of this blog.
